Default Ecommerce Suggestion

I am looking at creating a e-commerce site. I want customers to be able to order and I also want to process debit/credit cards on line.
Are the e-commerce add on in Fantastico worth trying? Any suggestions on how to get started?

Certainly, the ones is Fantastico are worth giving a try, especially Zen Cart. Besides, it is easy to install them from fantastico. You will also need a SSL for your website as you plan to process credit/debit cards.

I agree with you. I read somewhere that Zen Cart is the most preferred among the three shopping carts added on Fantastico. Suppose we don't want to use SSL for our website, is it possible to use PayPal instead of a merchant account to process payments?

Well, if you would like to give your customers your Paypal account details directly so that they can transfer money into your Paypal account then it will be possible, however, the visitors of your site won't feel safe if you do not install an SSL certificate installed on your site and hence they might not signup or consider your products. Therefore, it is recommended that you consider an SSL certificate for your site if you wish to accept online payments

Thanks Carl for clarifying. So, whether we use a merchant account or let PayPal take care of the payment process, we need to install the SSL certificate anyway. Besides installing an SSL, what are other security measures we need to have in place?

I'm with those recommending an SSL certificate. Another security measure to consider is how to prove you (and your site) are the real deal. Adding a digital signature and certificate will provide extra reassurance for customers.

You are most welcome

Yes, an SSL certificate is recommended even if you have Paypal or similar payment gateways to accept payments on your site.

Enabling firewall on the server on which the site is hosted, Anti-virus application installed on the server, two factor authentication which basically means that the site administrators (even you) will have to clear two layers of security to access the hosting environment i.e. server, backups, server monitoring etc. are some of the additional security measures you should/could take in order to keep your site and server fully secured.

Hope this helps
