SSL needed or no?
I was told recently that if I use Paypal for checkout then Paypal will be using their SSL when someone checks out. However, if I use a merchant on my site, then it would be my place to buy the SSL. Would there be any benefit to getting an SSL even if I am using Paypal?

I believe there are still benefits of using the SSL even if you are using PayPal as your payment method. For instance, if you require your visitors' personal details (name and email addresses) for list building purposes, you will need the SSL to guarantee your visitors privacy.

I completely agree, and you will find that many people, who know a little about what it means will actually look for it as a sign or a way of knowing that they are safe to input personal info.

I wanted to ask a similar question. If I create a ecommerce website then is it mandatory to have a SSL for the website ?

Basically, a ssl protects your data when you’re working in a web browser by encrypting all the information that is sent to or from your computer. When speaking about an e-commerce website, it is highly recommended to have a SSL for your website.

Yes, for eCommerce website, we recommend to purchase SSL Certificate as with a SSL certificate, you are able to encrypt data between the server and your clients. This is useful for online shopping for transmitting private documents via the Internet in secured way .

Right now the few people I deal with on the SSL note are all using Paypal, good catch. I had someone contact me recently telling me that their SSL was expired but when I looked it seemed fine on my end. I wonder what causes this?

Are you referring to your customers ?
If yes, you can check if their SSL certificates are expired and assist them accordingly, however, if you have received this from some other email address or an unknown source, I would recommend you to ignore it as there are some fraudsters who send emails to site owners who use SSL certificates mentioning that their SSL certificate is expired and ask them to renew which is obviously done just to get money from the site owner.

The SSL website will show a lock at the bottom bar of the browser. When you click 'View Certificate' it will show the date of expiry of the SSL

Yes you are right. But is there any difference what company the ssl belongs to?

There’s a wide range of different brands of SSL certificates available. In general, as long as most browsers recognize the SSL cert that you purchase, you should be fine purchasing even the cheapest of certificates. However, if its large company or government website you will want customers to know that you are using the highest grade of security.

The SSL certificate you should choose basically depends on your requirements. There are SSL certificates which are offered for 1 subdomain and there are SSL certificates which are offered for the entire site i.e. Multiple subdomains. Therefore, you should be clear about your requirements before you choose an SSL certificate.
Also, you should make sure that you choose an SSL certificate from a trusted provider which ensures higher level of security

You'll find many scammers sending emails to email account holders and asking them to buy or renew some kind of services and some of the email account holders who are not aware of it get in the trap and as a result loose a good amount of money or some service i.e. SSL certificate or domain etc.
Therefore, it is recommended that you should verify the email address through which the email was sent and if possible confirm with your service provider (company) if they have sent the email.

It is very important to have SSL. Besides all the reasons mentioned above, your visitors/customers have the security. Your customers will not buy anything from your store unless they see a SSL on the website.

When all said and done here I would like to know one thing: how much does it cost to buy a SSL certificate and what companies do you recommend?

I don't get the thing about SSL. What exactly is a SSL? Is it an application that you install on your server? I know what is its purpose but I'm interesting in how it works.

How does SSL work ?
SSL (also know as Secure Socket Layer) is a protocol which ensures secure transaction between the client web browser and the server. SSL was developed by Netscape. The protocol actually uses a Certificate Authority (CA) to verify both or one side of the transactions.
If an SSL certificate is installed on the site, the browser requests a secured page from the server (which is done via https://). Once the request is received by the server, it sends the public key with its certificate. After this, the browser checks if the certificate was issued by a trusted party (which is done through CA) and if the certificate is valid. Then, the public key is used by the browser to establish a secured connection with the server and the http data is encrypted.
I have tried to explain the process in simple terms and I hope this helps
