Default Wordpress the company

I wonder where Wordpress gets their income from. How do they monetize their website? They distribute all stuffs for free. I don't even see a single ad on their website. Do you have any idea about that?

Wordpress get their income from big companies that use their blogging service. As far as I know, only the big companies that use large amount of resources from wordpress pay fees. I'm not sure though how much the owners of wordpress are charging.

Wordpress is an open source project that is being developed by hundreds, possible thousands of developers around the world.

They could possibly earn commissions through the sites advertised on their site regarding Wordpress hosting options - WordPress › PHP / MySQL Web Hosting

BTW. People earn lots of money through the Internet, and it doesn't necessarily mean advertising, or slamming useless crap to people

Checkout the following links, probably these are the places from where Wordpress might be generating revenue.
  • en.wordpress.com/advanced-services/
  • jobs.wordpress.net/

There might be some other places too,I guess.

Wordpress also generates revenues with Wordpress VIP Hosting.

I have also found a few high traffic blogs which are Powered by WordPress VIP, as requested by Wordpress to mention them in their footer link.

There are also lot of other sources through which Wordpress generates revenue, such as Wordpress TV, Hosting, VIP Hosting.

I thought the guy who developed Twitter also started WordPress. Or did he create Blogger? Either way, aren't Blogger and WordPress essentially the same?

I don't think Blogger and Wordpress are the same when it comes to how they monetize their blog hosting. Google encourages the Blogger's users to place Adsense ads on their blogs, and that's the way Google monetizes Blogger.

Are there many blog owners using their VIP hosting compared to those who use the free version? I think most bloggers either use their free hosting service or just use the Wordpress platform and host their blogs on their own servers.

The number of users having VIP hosting is obviously less than the number of users using the free. However those few VIP Hosting blogs are very high traffic blogs which brings a backlink to Wordpress VIP Hosting.

According to the Founder/Developer of Wordpress, Wordpress creates profits on it's own.

It generates income from Google Adsense, Blog Hosting, Premium Accounts, Web Host Referrals, Wordpress Support, Poll Daddy, Automattic Kismet etc.

Hope this helps

I think WP also earns from cPanel for allowing it to give a direct link for installation. What do you think?

I think there is more benefit for Wordpress rather than cPanel by the link which is provided by cPanel (In Fantastico ;)) to download Wordpress with a few simple clicks and hence I don't think Wordpress charges cPanel to provide link

That's smart. Both parties receive mutual benefits from the "link exchange".

Thanks guys for the enlightening replies. Now I have some ideas on how Wordpress monetize their services. I just wonder about Adsense. Where does Wordpress place Adsense ads?

They may place ads on the Left or Right side of your blog. If not then the ads could placed in the middle of your post; between 2 paragraphs.

Wordpress generate revenue by providing professional WordPress consultants (for fee) and by providing enterprise support for large WordPress deployments (for fee).

All I know is that Wordpress is already running the Adsense. They show their ads on your blog so they can fund their services and I think we can't even post ads on our own Wordpress-based blogs.

Thanks, I also wonder about it. I don't know if Wordpress place ads on the blogs they host as I never host my blog there. I just use their platform to build my blogs and host them on a shared hosting server.
