ecommerce or Electronic commerce, commonly known as electronic marketing, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. Electronic commerce is generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of the exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of the business transactions.

There are several ecommerce applications available all over the internet which are to be installed on a website & clients can furthermore purchase the advertised products online. The shopping cart software must be installed on the server which hosts the site, or on the secure server which accepts sensitive ordering information.

A shopping cart software such as magentocommerce or OSCommerce can be used in e-commerce to assist people making purchases online. The software allows online shopping customers to accumulate a list of items for purchase, described metaphorically as "placing items in the shopping cart". Upon checkout, the software typically calculates a total for the order, including shipping and handling (i.e. postage and packing) charges and the associated taxes, as applicable.

Some shopping cart applications also allow for inventory management, which is helpful if you run a business with physical stock.

I'm currently in the process of setting up a magento shopping cart application. It's been alot of work so far.

Default Hi, Everyone!

You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view

Thanks for the enlightening discussion. Is it possible to run an online business (selling products or services) without ecommerce applications? Suppose I sell an ebook, can I just provide the customers the download link and let PayPal take care of the payments?

The problem there is how to you stop people that havent purchased the book from opening the link and downloading the book without payment? You need to have a shopping cart that allows virtual products to ensure that your product is protected from others simply getting the link from their friends and downloading the book without payment.

You also need to ensure the e book is of your own doing. In other words. You haven't copied someones copyright work and are flogging it off as your own.

However don't expect to be able to sit back and make money off e-book sales. Unless you have something amazing to offer, people wont part with their hard earned money for information available in the general domain.

As long as you plan to sell something it is, its almost important to remember that you are going to want to use something that is simple for the user of your site, but complex enough that its secure too.

If you didn't want the hassle of setting a shopping chart and handle the purchasing and payment process, you could use ecommerce services like Payloadz, where you can upload your files and get the links to the download page to promote.

Don't forget that you also have to have a marketing strategy for your business. You can not just expect customers to flock to your site. If you have a good content management plan, then you are more likely to attract new customers.

Yes, it is very helpful. Ecommerce allows people to carry out businesses without the barriers of time or distance. One can log on to the Internet at any point of time, be it day or night and purchase or sell anything one desires at a single click of the mouse. Another important benefit of Ecommerce is that it is the cheapest means of doing business.

There are many different options out there, check out the Avactis Shopping Cart they support digital products or E-goods. When the customer orders the product, he or she is granted access to download these files.
