What's the going rate for web design?

I'm thinking of branching out into web design, but one problem is that I haven't the foggiest clue how much web designs are usually worth. Looking at other designers' portfolios doesn't help since they don't post their prices but instead ask for people to contact them for a quote. I can't exactly email them and say "Hi, I'm going to compete against you, so can I ask what your prices are?"

Has anyone here ever used a web design service? If so, can you give me at least a ballpark figure where I can get started? I want to know the usual going rate for web design so I will know where to adjust my prices.
