Yeah, it's constant work just keeping up, much less improving your rankings. Not only does Google constantly change their algorithms (to prevent people from gaming the system, maybe?), but the other websites that share your niche also try to improve their rankings. Unless you're some big website that everybody links to (like Wikipedia), then you'll have to work all the time just to make sure you don't fall of the search results page.
I find that a lot of time I spend online is making sure that my rankings are safe. Since I run a few blogs, I use article marketing to try to keep my ranking. That means, by the way, that for every blog post I make — or every other blog post — I rewrite it for submission to article directories like EzineArticles. It's tough work, though, since I'm basically writing everything twice. >_<
