Most of the people try to Search for new techniques of SEO and do not use the old one's properly. Due to this they get jumbled up and cannot use either of the SEO techniques ;)

@nickgrnt : Following can be the silly mistakes which we usually overlook while optimizing our websites :
Misused Title, Meta, Anchor tags.
Over usage of keywords within content ( keyword stuffing ).
Unnecessary use of scripts like java scripts for making your website more interactive.
Linking to irrelevant websites ( though they may help you to get traffic but may not help you for SE ranking ).

One of the mistakes people do is using Flash in their website. Flash website is good to attract viewers but, search engine robots are unable to index sites with flash. So, try to avoid the flash and build your site in simple HTML.

Search engine algorithms always fluctuates. Most of the time webmasters create their content using unnecessary keywords. Search engines are now weighting more on content rather than the Meta Tags. So, create your content using most searched keywords along with the proper keyword density.

This is no more an issue with Google as far as I know. Google can now index text content contained in Flash files. But it is true all Search Engines may not do that.

Yes, If you are developing a new website to get more potential clients using SEO techniques, then it is recommended to limit Flash only to some portions of the web site or not to use at all.

Yes, Overusing any SEO Technique will always create a negative effect on your Search Engine rankings rather than a positive one. Hence, you should make sure that you use the SEO Techniques properly which would create a Positive effect on your Search Engine rankings.

As said by Matt Cutts in his own blog, that "people still sometimes make: buying a random software package that they think will get them a gold mine of links, especially by bulk emailing reputable sites. At this point, most site owners are savvy enough to realize that emails with link exchange requests are rarely hand-crafted with love. The best links are not paid, or exchanged after out-of-the-blue emails–the best links are earned and given by choice".

I think the only thing he want to suggest is don't waste your money on worthless softwares, instead spend your time on building your website reputation by creating impressive content and website. People will automatically provide a free link to your site.

Certainly, it is always better to create a good and unique content for your website rather than looking for expensive applications for Marketing purpose. You will get Backlinks automatically if you create good Unique content. Also, if you have Unique content for your website, you will not have to do much hard work to get good rankings in the Search Engines. Infact, you will also see that if the content is excellent, you will get good ranking automatically.

People run behind the number of backlinks and I think that this is the common mistake that people do. Well, it is obvious that quality is important than quantity. If you get few links and all of them possesses good quality then this will definitely help you in SE and vice versa.

Yes, another way is any content you embed in these Flash files should also be available in text format. That way it would be accessible to search engines.

Many times because of bad navigation visitors don't get what they are looking for and leaves the site immediately, to avoid these mistakes create a sitemap of you website so that it will be easier for visitors to find the exact info.

Yes, Sitemap will help visitors to understand and know what actually the website contains. However most of the visitors will like to view the sitemap only if the "Header" of the main web page of your website is too specific for visitors to understand what actually is the site all about.

It is always better to keep a Balance in Marketing each webpage of your website. People keep on Marketing the webpage for which they wish to have good rankings but they don't use marketing techniques for other webpages of the website which makes the other webpages weak and hence the whole website cannot get good rankings on the Search engines.

If you have good interlinking structure within website and have applied all SEO tactics for all pages then no need to do special marketing for inner pages they will rank automatically ;) provided you work hard for onpage and offpage optimization for all pages.
