How do keywords work?
How do keywords help your site rankings? Do you repeat the same words over and over in your content? Do you focus on specific words for the name or title of your website? Do use something called meta tags? And how do you signify which words are keywords for your site?

First of all every search engines rank webpages not websites. Every webpage has it's own value in search engine . Second most important thing in ranking returned results is relevance to your keyword. So, ranking of webpages depends on content and density of keyword used in it.

Sometimes you have to select five top keywords that is relevant to the content of your site, not just the title of your site. When a keyword is typed in a search engine, you will see a list of top ten sites results ranked there and they are your competitors. You may find some words you had not thought of and use them as appropriate keywords but still it should be related to the content because search engines can read appropriate metatags.

When searching for a particular destination, one has to know particular landmarks. Similarly, keywords and meta tags work as landmarks for search engines inorder to reach to your website. Keywords helps to understand about one's website. They give a quick description about the content of the website.

Web pages vs web sites. I didn't think of it that way. So, when using keywords, I should concentrate on the content of my landing page?

When using keywords, you should concentrate on the contents of the main page/landing page of your website. SEO generally considers the quality content on the main page only. So make sure you use keywords from the main page content itself. This would help you getting more traffic and good PR as well.

Keywords are the very most important elements of your website. Without them you cannot top the Search engine result pages. You can use the targeted in both meta tags and the content. Using the keyword suggestion tools like Google Adwords, Overture & Word tracker you can select the most appropriate words for your site. Use maximum 15 top most keywords in the meta tags. Or the best way is to analyze your competitors website, gather his information and find some similar keywords.

If you want to try and attract visitors to a golf site, then your main page should have golf-related keyword - but your inner pages could be targeting specific niche key-phrases to draw more traffic. One page for 'golf balls' and another for 'golf clubs' etc

Does it matter how many times the keywords appear on the page? Do you repeat the same words throughout the content on your webpage, or does frequency not matter. I'm still just a little confused how they work.

I'm slowly learning that each individual webpage is ranked differently in searches depending on what keyword each page is about. This means if you have more than one page on your site but all targeting different keyword or keyphrases then your site should refelct fairly well for several different search results .

Using the keywords as per content of each webpage of your website would give you better results. For example, if you have cosmetic products on one page then you can use "Cosmetic" keyword for that page and you can use "Clothes" for the page on which you have Clothes to be displayed.
Hope this helps..

Well, i think the title and the first sentence in the text of the body and the first words that are used in each sentence are very important for on-page SEO. The first sentence and the words used in them are very much important, that creates an impression on search engines as well as visitors.

That's correct. If you use keywords where they are not required then it will certainly not create a positive effect. Infact, it can create a negative effect on your SEO rankings and hence keywords should only be used when they are required.

I'm going to have to do some more research on "keywords" usage. After reading this thread I just realized they can make or break all the work I've put into my site. Thanks for the heads up.
