Adult sites and profit

As "adult entertainment" is a major portion of internet traffic, I have to ask this question. Are adult sites profitable? Are there affiliate programs where you can use content from pay sites, keep access to your site free or for a nominal charge, and make money as an affiliate?

You should be able to earn some good amount once your website is popular ofcourse.

If you choose to have a video sharing website, you will need to install a video sharing script first. Most scripts will allow you to grab videos, that is embed videos from other websites like YouTube.

You can decide to charge or keep it free, depends on you. I will suggest to keep it free initially though. Later you can earn from adsense programs as well.

I would be concerned, though, about safety here. Adult sites, as well as many of the stars in the videos, are notoriously infected with viruses. Any service to be used for such a site would have to have, in my opinion, extensive virus protection. Both for the webmaster, and for anyone visiting the site.

Taggert, that was funny This is just a thought I've been playing with. I'm not sure I could get away with this anyway because I'd have to explain to my wife where the money was coming from.

I think it is very well possible but take for example a friend of mine that runs a gambling site, he gets nailed pretty hard with spammers and I am sure his host has their hands full with the ddos attacks and those trying to break in (same friend that needed the windows hosting). I think if you have a good team you could get away with it, but I would keep it free like stated unless you are provided something that is not from some other site (like the youtube video mention).

First of, I don't think Adsense allows adult sites. Also, unless you are creating unique adult videos you'll probably have a hard time standing out as there's loads of sites of that niche out in the net already. Piracy has also infiltrated the adult industry so I don't think it's as profitable anymore.

Just some things to think about...I personally would use my time & resources more creatively

Well, Earning money is surely possible from an Adult site and hence there are many adult websites on the internet ;) However, make sure that you will be able to earn money only if the website gets famous and well known as you will be able to get advertisements on it. You won't get instant results from it but you will definitely get results if you use the proper techniques to promote it (Do not ask about techniques ;) )

$20 billion sounds like alot, but $20 billion divided by how many sites. And I'm sure that there are a few sites that probably generate a large majority of that revenue.

carlowen, that little tidbit tells me alot. If BODHost would definitely be interested in hosting such sites, that would tell me that such sites are indeed quite profitable.

Well, Hosting Adult websites is surely possible on our servers but you should make sure that you have Legal Adult content on your websites. Also, BODhost does not host these sites as they have good profits but these websites are hosted on our servers as Hosting these sites is legal and allowed in the Hosting Industry. We have no problem with Adult content. We don't allow Child Pornography as there are strict laws to ban child pornography. You won't face any problems as long as you disallow your users to upload anything related to child pornography.

If you run a legal adult site with a you-tube like script but lots of adult images there for visitors to watch, you can earn from how many times the videos or images there has been clicked by the visitors. It is somewhat acts like the Google Adsense so it could be profitable somehow.
