Default Social Networking Site

I just bought software to begin my own social networking site. It's kind of like a facebook clone thing and it looks really cool. If I get loads and loads of people on there, that's going to blow my hosting budget right out of the water isn't it?

That sounds cool! Where did you find software that does this? That would be really handy for one of my sites. I have a forum set up for it but a social networking site would be way better.

Yes, your website would need more resources once it gets popular. An upgrade to the next higher plan is recommended in such cases.

Generally our clients use a dedicated server for video sharing and social networking websites. They expect the website to grow within couple of months and rather than upgrading later they prefer a server that suits their future requirements also.

It's always better to keep some resources free to cover up spikes in usage at anytime.

Indeed if the traffic to your site gets increased and you wish your site to be live then you must upgrade to a higher plan. In fact if it is a social networking site like a facebook then you shall upgrade to the dedicated server plan only. BodHost offers several dedicated server plans. You can check them here.

Well, if you are going to have to spend more money to keep your website running, you are going to have to earn it somehow, preferably form the site itself. Doesn't Facebook derive a substantial amount of income from advertisers?

Sigh. I guess that's my biggest problem then. I don't have any advertisers at this point. If I load up the site with affiliate programs and end up making no sales I'm going to be out of pocket a lot of money.

I thought there were affiliate marketing programs that don't cost anything to join. What about Commission Junction or ROI Rocket? Are they not free to sign up?

You cannot expect advertisements to pay you unless you have a popular website. So I can only ask you to invest some good money initially and focus on making the website popular. Good Luck!

That's true... You can't make any profit unless your site is well optimized. It is better to optimize your website, bring some targeted visitors then apply the affiliate programs.

Maybe Noobie meant that just signing up for a load of free affiliate programs doesn't guarantee sales and he's still paying for the hosting and bandwidth on a really busy social networking site?

Yeah Chiana got it kind of right. If the site gets really busy but there aren't many sales coming through from affiliate programs and if I don't have any paid advertisers then I could be spending a lot of money without earning much in return.

Advertisements are the biggest source of income once your website got famous.....Google's 99% revenue is generated from advertisements.

Certainly. Most of the websites on the Internet earn money through online advertisements. Also, the advertisements are not limited as you can have advertisements of a Music company even if your website is not related to it.

I might give it a try with a limited member base to see how it works first. If it looks like it might work for me I'll expand it as I can. Thanks everyone.

Social network sites take a lot of work. It's nothing something that is going to grow over night. But, it can grow and become just as successful as any of the big guys in my opinion.

If you're getting lots of people at your Site, wouldn't that pay for your upgrades in hosting needs? I don't know a lot but from what I see, Bodhost is the way to go!
