I have been doing some research on E-commerce but I am facing some problem could you help me.

Hello Mark,

Some carts are free such as IonCube Cart , OScommerce, Zen and Joomla VirtuMart etc. Others can get rather expensive but you get what you pay for in most instances. Almost all carts are database driven and require Apache servers with php support but many hosting companies offer this and some even have internal scripts that will set up the cart for you including your database. Hosting companies that offer cPanel as their back end usually have a program called Fantastico that offers several different shopping carts and CMS systems that can be set up easily with a few clicks.

For your payment gateway you would need an account. Pay Pal is free and good for the novice. Others require a credit history for accepting credit cards.

I know this isn't quite the same thing, but when my ecommerce business was still new and I had no idea how to work external programs, I just used the "add to cart" functional button from my paypal account. It allowed customers to buy multiple products from my site and the funds went straight to paypal. This was very handy while my business was still growing, although I use Joomla VirtuMart these days.

Instead of joomla/virtuemart you can consider Magento it is a Fantastic e-commerce platform, and you can easily install it on your server.

This thread already has an answer, but I thought that I would share my experience of OsCommerce - Its a fantastic platfrom and has a plugin architecture fro payments - if you want to use paypal for your method of payment then you simply enable the paypal plugin, similarly there are plugins available for direct credit card checking with your bank and even buy now pay later credit options that link into credit services.

What makes Magento better/different than virtumart? It took me so long to figure out what on earth I was doing with virtumart that I really don't want to spend another two months tweaking and fixing and scratching my head about another platform if it's no different to the one I have.

Magento is relatively new compared to virtumart. I've heard some good reviews of Magento recently and its community is growing day by day. Its worth to give Magento a try

I took a quick look at Magento and it's actually pretty good. It's not as difficult as I thought to set up and I like that it's easier to customize. Thanks for the tip.
