Default Server Root Access or not?

Hello

In terms of security should End user get server root access or not? And if you think there is no problem to give server root access to customer then include reasons why you feel that? :drunk:

Hi

As we provide server root access to our customer I believe it would be difficult to refuse a customer root access to their own server, after all it's theirs. In case of any problems, which are caused due to root access is not cloaked by managed hosting services, however, as a web host we help in troubleshooting.

Hi

Root access doesn't sounds that you can do anything you want. After all, there are some limitation like users cannot install any illegal software.

Hi

IMHO root access should be given, as a dedicated server hosting customer I'd never purchase a web server hosting services from a web host who would not provide server root access. If you have a root access to your server you can do those things that are simpler to do, but you should not break any TOS. Fire1

Hi

I believe it is good have a web server root access. Like other users I'd also like to do some things myself, but if I find myself in trouble I simply provide my root login details to support department to troubleshoot the issues. On the other hand if you are really efficient to handle your server's minor issues then you can solve those issues by yourself.

Hi

Personally I would like to suggest if you don't have a good knowledge of server then don't do anything without consulting it through your web host. If you mess up something with server settings then it is too much hassle to repair.

Definitely you can do some thing yourself, but as a part of server management you should left the job for expertise.

Hi

As a part of server monitoring if any customer crooked about things and try to prove that he/she have not touched anything, web host know better than them. So there is no matter whether you have a root access or not you cannot messed up with server and that is the reason there is no reason to deny root access to customers. Thanx

Hi

In my opinion dedicated server user should have a root access, whether he/she use it or not. Dedicated, means the entire server is dedicated to you, it means you have a full control on your servers.

HI

Sometimes customers with managed hosting services use their root access to experiment and try to learn server administration and if they break something then they are try to exploit support to have what they have broken need to be fixed and sometimes they open up security loop holes by changing server settings so I believe server root access should not be provided to customer.

Hi

I think it should be dependent on what kind of of things customer want to do through root access. If the customer has no knowledge of server management then root access should no be given, but if the customer know its responsibilities then providing server root access is not an issue. :drunk:
