Create VPS on Dedicated Servers

I know that VPS's are created on Dedicated Servers, however, I am not aware as to how this is done :( Also, what kind of tools, applications etc. are required for the same ?

Hi,

VPS's are created on Dedicated Server using virtualisation software.

There are many s/w's available in the market to create virtual machine such as
Viruozzo,VM Ware,etc.

You would need a Dedicated server with a good configuration in order to create VPS's. Once you have the Dedicated server, you need to install a Virtualization application (paid or free, depending on your choice ;)) on the Dedicated server and then create VPS's on it with the help of Virtualization application.

Do not forget VMware is known for Hardware Virtualization whereas Virtuozzo is a software-based virtualization software. ;)

Hyper V is another type of virtualization technique introduced by Microsoft. Not to forget,Hyper V is a hypervisor based technology. This too is a hardware virtualization and offers a good isolation capability from other VPS`s on a physical server. This technology is much superior than normal virtualization softwares.

I'm also quite confused about the terms used here. I understand where VPS comes from but the method and the tools that are needed confuse me. Do you need both hardware and software virtualization to properly setup a VPS?

Software Virtualization is good enough to upgrade from a shared or a reseller hosting package and priviledges similar to a dedicated server yet with a lot of restrictions in case of over-loads and where more resources are required. For e.g., you can never burst over the allocation when required such as SLM feature in Virtuozzo.

However, with hardware virtualization, you have more access to your system and resources of the hardware directly - in simple terms.

NO, software virtualization and hardware virtualization are two different concepts of setting up a VPS.

If you are a customer, you do not need to worry about the setup of the VPS. That part should be taken care by your hosting provider.

If you are are VPS Hosting provider, all you need to do is select the application that is required and proceed with the setup as per the requirement.

Thanks for answering my questions Shane.

So I don't really need to understand these virtualizations because the hosting company will do this for me. I'm still glad to learn about this so that I will know what to say if the hosting company tells me about these things.
