How do you choose an operating system for your dedicated server? I have heard of Ubuntu, Debian, Linux, Windows, Redhat or FreeBSD. What are the differences? Which ones are free? Why so many to choose from? It is all so confusing sometimes I wish there were only two or three options and they were all very different.
If I'm correct, there are only 2 platforms for operating systems, Windows and Linux. Ubuntu, Debian, Redhat, and FreeBSD (I'm not sure with FreeBSD) are Linux based OS's. Linux based OS's are free.
It's not really hard to choose, think of which OS you are most comfortable with and that's what you are to go for.

I think you are incorrect..!
Apple.com had released OS Mac OS X long back in 1999.
All hosting control panels are having almost same basic functions, custom features and software abilities that makes it unique. Every control panel offered is been properly tested and certified for the dedicated server, so the right fit for you just depends on your particular preference or requirement, the purpose for the server, and which operating system (Microsoft Windows Server or Linux) you plan to use.
Thank you for all the replies. I was hoping someone could explain more what the differences are. There seem to be some who offer more options than others but I don't know which. If Linux is free then that is what I want it based on.
