Default Cloud Hosting and spikes

It seems like everyone is talking about cloud hosting suddenly. The main rave that I hear is how cloud hosting eliminates issues caused by major spikes in traffic and it is amazing for back ups and such. Are these the "highlights" or what else is beneficial about cloud hosting?

I think, although I'm still learning about it, that because there are multiple "clouds" serving to back up the data, there is little to no down time when something is off with the servers or there is a need for an update. I'm just reading and learning about them, so I could be wrong.

See how everyone define "Cloud Computing" in a different way... It's not just one thing, there are lots of different things that comes from different people but basically, we are using the same computers connected to the network providing services to customers. Cloud computing is something that can balance up and down instantly by using the shared resources (physical or virtual). VPS’s that are managed by Xen with a combination of NFS and iSCSI storage, LDAP+Kerberos, load balancer and a master SQL cluster is “cloud”. They are not loaded with the difficulties of how everything works, they are simply having an interface to manage their data and services. As the requirement/traffic increases more Xen nodes can be provided and assigned different tasks to ensure their specific applications run in the most effective and optimal way.

It all sounds pretty complex to me. I think there are getting to be so many hosting options that many people are hesitant to go with anything other than shared hosting because that is the simple form of it all.

I am with you. There are way too many options to keep track of in this situation. It's just very hard to keep up with the new options that continue to develop, especially when it's something you do part time.

Agreeing as well. I believe there are some things that just aren't for certain people. If you can't do it yourself and you need the option then there is always the option to outsource.

It is good to host a cloud website, applications or data bases which always needs large amount of resources. For e.g. if you are getting pretty good amount of visitors per day or even per hour, you will need to make sure that the system which is handling the load will need to use some kind of clustered system.
