dedicated and managed hosting services
I would assume there are more businesses that use a dedicated server but is there a good ratio to give inquiring minds? I always think most people for personal sites would do just fine on a shared server, but when it comes to some things (or some personalities that prefer to be alone) dedicated would be the way to go.

Actually, I have found more businesses use shared hosting. Most of them do not want the cost of having their own dedicated server. I can say this with authority because I work with many businesses who have their websites on shared service providers.
Since 99% of businesses in the US are small businesses, they just can't afford the cost of the server and to pay someone to keep it running. Shared hosting is usually cheap, very fast, and virtually no administration is required.

Basically, it all depends on a few important factors like websites traffic, type of websites to be hosted, price and so on.. Dedicated hosting is recommended if your setup up is going to be very customized and you need full flexibility over your server.

Also, you really should be good with computers if you go with a dedicated server. Yes, even if you have a good control panel to do "all the work" for you. When things go wrong, you are on your own. Not many dedicated server providers will provide support. I've been reselling both for many years, and I prefer putting my customers onto shared accounts so I don't have to deal with time consuming patches and maintenance and upgrades and so on.
There are benefits to dedicated, but you need to know what you are getting into.

Right on dude. If you can't do the basic trouble shooting and file handling/editing in a shell, a dedicated server is not for you.
However, I learned using the shell on linux with a dedicated server, but I had people I could refer to for help.
Honestly, the best thing to do is setup a linux server at home (no KDE, GNOME, or other desktop) with apache and ftp and other stuff. No control panel at all, then try to administer it and learn. It doesn't take long.

Nice tip Jeremy
However, all servers at bodhost are fully managed. So, there's very little that some one might need to know when getting a server from Bodhost.
Server management includes security monitoring, installing, compiling and maintaining the standard server application/software package, latest security updates, including 24/7 technical support.

I think some people (businesses as well) worry that they are not going to be able to manage a full server on their own, no offense, but unless you know what you are doing you might cause more harm than good. Having a place like BH that allows for managed support and decent pricing is what matters most, esp. when a business is shopping around (2nd only to good support).

This is the reason we always suggest you to choose a fully managed server from a reliable hosting provider as it gives you a sense of security and reliability which is very necessary when it comes to web hosting services.
Also, if you choose a fully managed server, it makes it possible for you to contact the hosting provider at any point of time for any issues regarding the server which is a plus point

Server hosting business is getting over crowded and there's e competition in this webhosting world hence almost all hosting services are now offered with 24x7 Free Server management services so as to attract new faces ;)
Few webhost still charge for server management but they will have to change their mind ;)

24x7 support is indeed very important, however, more important is the kind of support services you get ;)
Also, when it comes to attracting customers, I think the best way to attract customers towards your hosting company is providing them with quality hosting services rather than claiming what is impossible to provide i.e. unlimited disk space and bandwidth etc. which is now claimed by many hosting providers in order to get more customers

Dedicated servers are always a better solution for all types of business websites, but when it comes to personal websites, only shared hosting is a better option or are there any more options available?

Indeed. If you have to have features of a dedicated server, however, your budget does not allow you to go for a dedicated server then you can choose a VPS for hosting your websites
A VPS is an isolated server which shares the hardware of the same physical server, however, a VPS can be considered as a dedicated server as it uses it's own disk space, bandwidth, IP's and RAM and you can also reboot a VPS independently
Hope this helps...

Shared Hosting is a good option , though you expose your website to many threats which come with this hosting. VPS hosting is the second best hosting option after the dedicated server hosting. You can go for the shared hosting if you dont share business critical data on the website (Server)

VPS is for sure a great option for small business websites. But, as you have mentioned personal websites, a basic plan ie. cpanel web hosting package can do as well as personal sites requires basic features which are available in cpanel web hosting package.

You can also consider a cPanel shared hosting package for hosting some Wordpress blogs. cPanel hosting package is provided with cPanel control panel including Fantastico which can be used to install and update Wordpress and this can be done with few simple clicks

It is correct that many of the business can afford the cost for the dedicated servers. The website is just the point of contact for them, so at this scenario shared hosting is best for these sites. Shared hosting will give the services in comparatively lower cost than the dedicated servers.
When it comes to be just alive on the net with less requirements of disk space and less bandwidth you can blindly go with the shared plans

Basically,it depends on various factors when it comes to choosing a server for hosting a business website. No matter if the website is small or large, whats more important is how critical is the data and what level of security is necessary for the website data to be safe. Dedicated Servers offer the optimum security, also, due to the ever increasing competition in the hosting industry, these servers are available at pretty affordable prices.
If asked,my personal choice would definitely be Dedicated Server if security and privileges concerned.

Dedicated server is certainly the most preferred web hosting solution as it has got a lot of benefits, however, if you are starting a new business website and you are not aware of the amount of traffic you will receive and the sales of website, a VPS would be an ideal choice as it is much cheaper in comparison to a dedicated server and offers almost all the features of a dedicated server
Though, there are some restrictions on the VPS's when compared to a dedicated server, it is definitely the best solution after a dedicated server
