Question Many Questions to come.

I've had issues with hosting recently and decided that I might want to opt for a dedicated server instead of doing shared hosting and having issues again. I'm not sure how it all works or what the recommendations for going with a dedicated server are. I have just been told it is the best hosting option. I noticed that BOD Host had this forum so I had to join!

Welcome to BODHost Forums!
There is no simple answer to this question. You may need a dedicated server in following cases:-

Security – Being on a dedicated server, you are on your own. The server is not shared amongst any other users. Nobody can have access to the server. Therefore, you can be sure that your data is safe. For example, on a shared host, in case of wrong configuration of server, any other users on the server might be able to read your data. If you own VPS, there is System Admin to read your data. However, if you own a dedicated server, there is nobody who can access the server, except you.

CPU power – If you own a shared hosting plan or you have a VPS then CPU, RAM and I/O resources are shared with other users on same server. If, in case, any user exceeds the use of CPU and/or RAM, the server performance can suffer greatly, sometimes enforcing it to go down. In this case, you do not have any option other than waiting for hosting provider to take necessary action. This is not the case with dedicated server; the CPU works only for your site. It does not mean that the server can never go down, however, sometimes, you have control on the situation to work on it and get it up as soon as possible.

Performance – Every thing that we have discussed in this article, directly or indirectly relates to performance. As there is no one to share the server, indeed, you get best performance.

Please let us know your requirements in detail, so that we can help you with selecting the best suitable plan.

I am not certain of what I need however the place I used before was less than $10 a month. Now that I am progressing in my career I will have many sites I work on and may need hosting at some point for those epecially those who know absolutely nothing about it and won't even consider a tiny plan. I personally have an estore, blog, 4 sites which are basically just entry portals and then 2 other little sites maybe 10 pages each. I do need to host a ton of images though, if that makes a difference.

A starter VPS plan will work for you. These come in linux and windows, so whichever you are more comfortable in. It will be about $25/month.

Yes, you can start with VPS starter. It's an isolated server that share the hardware of a single physical server. You can see it as a small dedicated server because it uses its own disk space, RAM , IP address and it can also be rebooted independently. It acts exactly like a Dedicated server.

It's good to start with the VPS starter plan. Windows and Linux have this feature and the setup is free since I purchased the starter plan, Linux type from Bodhost a long time ago.

Okay I know absolutely nothing about VPS. What do I need to know to get started with this? My computer runs on windows so I would assume I need to go with windows as I know nothing in regards to Linux? What is the difference please?

Just cause you don't know linux doesn't mean you can go with it. In my opinion Linux is pretty much always the better choice for servers. You can do all the administrative stuff with your control panel. I learned linux by using a linux server at home which was a little embedded device so I had to do everything on the command line. There's only probably 10-15 commands you need to learn in linux to really be able to handle the shell.

Anyways, you can go with Windows if that is what you feel better with. You don't really need to know anything. Bodhost is fully managed, so they are always there to help you when you need it.

Is it possible to have my own dedicated server at home or in my office? What would be the best choice and specs and how much would it cost? What would be the disadvantages and advantages vs. dedicated hosted service?

You could, but you would have to have a dedicated line also. You would need something faster than DSL or Cable unless you want your site to be very slow.

If you sites are low traffic, and don't have any big downloads on them or anything, you could do with a T1 for about $200/month. Although, for at least a decent speed you would need a T3 which will run you around $1000 a month.

This is why its cheaper to use services like Bodhost. They already have the dedicated lines and can spread that bandwidth out among multiple users, meaning you don't pay near as much for the dedicated connection.

Exactly what will your dedicated server do? That will help me answer your question more clearly.

I had no idea that this was the case. I've never needed a dedicated server, so I hadn't given it much thought before I joined the Bodhost forums. I always thought that dedicated hosting was expensive, but I didn't have a clue how high the costs ran. Wow.

That's only if you want to get your own lines. Dedicated hosting with someone like bodhost will run you from $50-$500 or more. Of course, Bodhost and others also offer VPS, which are dedicated also for a fraction of that cost. Bodhost starts at 24.99 right now for a dedicated VPS.

Yep, I had read that. I was just marveling at the costs involved in running a business like this. $50 sounds like a steal in that context.

Honestly, if you know Linux I highly recommend it. You can also consider the Webmin control panel to help you administer your Linux server.

If you don't know Linux at all then you might should go with Windows if you are familiar with that.

I'd recommend setting up a centos Linux server at home in a virtual machine and uncheck installing any Desktop when you install it then see if you can manage it with nothing more than a shell login.
