Perhaps this is only a question of preferences, but are there any advantages to using one over the other? Is there even any real difference between the two (I understand they're both frontends for iptables)? It couldn't pin down any details from Mr. Google, so I want to see what the BODhost community thinks.

CSF is much better & far advanced than the older one [APF]
There are fans for both sides, actually. Even for APF, which is, like Rocky says, the older one. Personally, I'd pick CSF, especially if you use a cPanel/WHM server as CSF integrates fully into cPanel/WHM. With CSF you also get the LFD module which monitors all connections and processes on the server. You also get additional functionality, like being able to limit memory, the number of processes and the max time they will run for all accounts on the server.
LOL I don't even know the difference between the two. As long as it works, I'm fine with it. Isn't firewall configuration included in the managed services? I hope so. There's a lot going on behind that scenes that I'm sure I'm not aware of, but for the average user (like me), all that matters is that everything just works. I'll leave the advanced stuff like that to the tech heads (and I mean that in the nicest possible way!) that keep things running smoothly for me. :D
I have to say I like CSF. I've never has any issues with it and I like the way it functions. A plus is the LFD module which is something that I needed anyway.
Heh. Looks like the trend is toward CSF. Makes sense, considering that that CSF is the newer software. I have heard, though, that there have been people who've had problems with CSF, usually on non-cPanel servers. In those cases, some have found that APF was more stable for them.
This is all hearsay, though, so take it all with a grain of salt. ;)
