A dedicated IP means that a website has its own IP address. In that case, when you type in your URL or the IP address, both will bring you to the same domain name.

We generally recommend using a dedicated IP when you need a Private SSL Certificate for your website.

Dedicated IP address is also called as static IP. It is an IP which is not shared by any other website.

I agree with Amelia!

If you have a business oriented website then you probably will need a dedicated IP address for your site. Especially if you have a merchant account and accept credit card payments on your site.

Yes, a Dedicated IP address is recommended for E-commerce website. It is recommended as a website with a Dedicated IP address is considered to be more secured in comparison to a website with a Shared IP address.

Having your website on a Dedicated IP have its own importance like :
If you want to access your website by FTP or through Web browser even when the domain name is inaccessible, ( incase if your domainname is on propagation periods. ) then you can access your website using IP address.

So do you mean that if someone is on shared hosting plan then his/her site suffers when it comes to SE?

This has been a topic for Debate since a very long time. Most of the Search Engine experts do not agree to it. A website with a Dedicated IP address is considered to be more secured but is it more considered by Search Engines is still a question. Mostly, the content of your website is what matters.

Hope this helps

IMO, if your website is hosted on a server on which most websites are blacklisted then then you may have to face some issues with SE ranking due to Bad Neighbor... ;)

For average website It doesn't matter whether it is on shared or not. It only becomes an issue if the other users begin spamming from that shared IP.

Well, according to a Google Engineer (Who had explained this to the Writer) when a Search Engine Spider first comes to your website, it will analyze your website with basic HTML 1.0. If the Spider is successful in Analyzing your website then it will go about and your website will get indexed. If your website will be hosted with a Dedicated IP address then it will get indexed directly as the spider will be able to resolve the website directly. Due to this the website will not be accessed with Basic HTML 1.0. Hence, if the website will be resolved soon, it will get indexed soon.

The Search Engine Expert also states that the website hosted on a Shared IP address isn't bad at all.

Hope this helps...

What if some 500 sites are running on a same IP and are linked to each other as well as with some bad neighborhood. Will it make a bad impact on other sites which are not linked to bad neighborhood? Just because they are on same IP address.

Yes, surely it will affect ranking of websites which are hosted on same server using same IP address. Bad neighborhood is a real pain ;) so its always better to host your website on dedicated server.

You are most welcome. Also, I would like to add, if the Search Engine Spiders are not able to parse the website through HTML 1.0, they will try to parse the website through HTML 2,3,4 and this may take 2 or 3 months to happen. Until your site is parsed by the Google spider, it will use the main IP address and the main website hosted on the IP address. It will return until it finds the specific IP address of your website. Till the time it finds the specific IP address of your website, the links you build will not be counted towards your website but it will be counted towards other website (probably the main website). This is what makes a Dedicated IP address important as you wouldn't want the links build by your website to be counted towards for any other website.

Hope this will help in understanding why a Dedicated IP is more preferred in comparison to a Shared IP address.
