Default Why not Mac server?

I'm sorry if I sound really ignorant for this question but why aren't there any Mac servers at all? Is it because they don't have an actual OS for servers or is it because it is too different from Windows and Linux?

PS. Do you really need a special OS to run a server?

Yes, there are MacOSx Web Servers that run on MAC OS. However, operating a MACOSx is not as easy when compared to Linux or Windows and yes it's different from the other two Operating System. With MACOSx server, you can host a web server, mail server, dns server, MySQL dedicated server or RoR server.

MACOSx Servers are known to be best used for e-commerce Mac applications.

Hope that helps!

Regards,

Shane Phillips

I am completely agree with Shane .Mac Os is very difficult to use as compared to Windows and Linux.Windows and Linux are very easy to manage and very much secured the Mac OS.Linux and Windows Os have lots of features which Mac OS doesn't have.

Windows and Linux are very similar so people can use them easily. Mac OS are very different and it is probably harder to use if you don't know much about it. However, I've not seen too many Mac servers at all in the market.

Windows and Linux are the most preferred and well known operating systems all over the world. When it comes to Mac, it hasn't gained so much popularity yet. Hence, Mac is not preferred and there aren't many Mac servers provider available. Also, as it is difficult to manage Mac, it makes it difficult for the web hosting providers to provide servers with Mac operating systems.

They do have an actual OS for servers. Mac OS X is the easiest of all the MAC server operating systems. It is very hard to compare MAC with Linux or Windows. Windows and Linux have their own features. It is easy to understand Windows or Linux while MAC requires good knowledge to work on it.

I have not tried using the Mac Os server yet and I'm not familiar with its special features. I just heard that it is difficult to use than the two popular servers.

An interesting question indeed, now that I think about it I don't recall seeing a company offering such servers but as everyone already stated, Windows & Linux are the most popular and trusted server OSes so companies stick with them as they've proven to be effective. Macs tend to be expensive so I imagine that a Mac server costs a lot more than a Windows server, so that's probably another issue...

The Mac OS has different features in comparison to Windows and Linux and hence the softwares, games etc. which run on Linux and Windows might not be supported on Mac OS. However, this is not necessary.

Yes, you are right, Kratos! Mac Servers are too costly. Also, the OS is not user-friendly. It is too difficult to play with it for a newbie or any one new to hosting.

It is worth considering Linux Server - cost saving as well as easy to use

Thumbs up

Below are some of the disadvantages of Mac OS:

1) The first one is offcourse the software compatibility as almost all the applications of Windows or say Microsoft are not supported by Mac OS. Due to this reason, you won't be able to use many of the 3rd party applications even if you have and wish to use them :(

2) If you are a newbie, make sure you will find it really very arduous to theme the operating system for your requirements.

3) It is considered to be the last choice if you are a gamer as most of the games available for Windows (which might also be supported on Linux) are not supported on Mac OS and hence you won't be able to get that gaming experience with Mac OS

4) Though, you will be able to modify the operating system with some of the 3rd party applications available, Mac OS is very limited when it comes to performing tasks if you compare it with Linux or Windows.

Hope this helps....
