Default Which hosting

I plan on making a website with forums and some tutorials. This would probably be a small - medium type of site. I was wondering, what is the best type of hosting to use: Dedicated or Shared. Also what makes the two so different that the prices are so far apart.

I would definitely say shared hosting package as it's much cheaper when compared to a dedicated server and also your requirements are pretty low as of now and doesn't need to be hosted on a dedicated server. However, you can definitely consider a VPS Hosting package for now if you are assured of considerable resource usage in the near future.

OK thanks.

At what point should someone consider dedicated servers? Will it increase performance by a noticeable amount? Also, what makes a website run slow?

It seems that on most shared hosts, you find out that you need to upgrade when the company suspends your account for "resource abuse"..

However, if you have a VPS you can monitor your site's resources easily as there's usually a little panel telling you how much RAM your site is using. Once you notice that the RAM usage is getting close to the maximum amount you have in your account, you might want to upgrade the VPS or to a dedicated server if you feel that your site is growing too quickly. I'd recommend that you upgrade the VPS first though unless your budget can handle the cost of a dedicated server right away.

What is usually the price difference between Shared and Dedicated? I see that on this site it is a pretty big difference. What is the average amount that I would have to spend on dedicated hosting?

There is a good amount of difference between a Shared hosting package and a Dedicated server. However, a Dedicated server is much more preferred due to the features it offers. The price of the Dedicated server depends on the hosting platform you choose, the server specifications and the additional services you would like to go for. If you can give some more information on the specifications you would like to have or your requirements, it will be possible for us to suggest you a Dedicated server accordingly.

Shared hosting package can easily handle low level websites with limited number of visitors. Problem starts when the load and traffic increases on your website. Shared host package have more down time than a dedicated server.By upgrading to Dedicated server, you'll be increasing the amount of uptime for your site and eventually attract even more. As well upgrading to a Dedicated server will improve the reliability and performance, as well as giving you total control over your website.

Both plans are suitable depending on how you want to host your website. Basically, it all depends on a few important factors like website traffic, selling hosting further, price, running specific applications/ script, resources and so on..

Dedicated hosting is recommended if your setup up is going to be very customized and you need full flexibility over your server.

If you are still unsure, you may want to chat with a sales representative who should help you choose the best plan

If you want a good service for your website and you need lots of bandwidth, go for dedicated hosting. In my experiences, if you ever get to 2000 visitors, upgrade to dedicated or else it will be really slow. Also if you are adding chats, use dedicated if you have lots of people.

Yes, a Dedicated server is always the best option if you have a Live chat service on your website. However, it is not necessary that a Dedicated server is required if you have 2000 visitors/Per month on your website. In some cases, a higher configuration VPS would work.

In my opinion, it will depend on the kind of traffic that your website will generate, or how pliable you can manage your server and how much you are eager to spend on one of these servers. Shared hosting is cheaper, more people are allowed access to hosting and anyone can afford to use it. Dedicated hosting is expensive, because there is exclusivity of use and you can control your own server that is not shared with other users. I think this hosting is commonly used by larger companies and they pay the license fee to use it.

Yes, I agree with you, it depends on the traffic and type of applications you want to run. Dedicated server is always better than Shared hosting package but, it is too expensive for low traffic website's that the reason Shared packages are suggested for low traffic websites.Hammering

To start with, you should go for a shared hosting plan. These plans are cheap and as the site is new, it would require less resources. Shared hosting is just what should be perfect for you.Once the site grows older and the traffic starts to increase, then you can consider upgrading to a VPS or a dedicated server plan.
No doubt that Dedicated server is the best, but only if the site demands resources that comes with a dedicated server, then it is sensible to opt for a dedicated server, else you would be wasting resources as well as money.

Matt

Indeed if you do not need much resources and you purchase dedicated server that can be definitely beneficial for the hosting provider but you will loose your business. Hammering

Basically, choosing a Shared hosting package or a Dedicated server depends on the resources required by your website. It also depends on the revenue you generate from your website. After all, you will be able to pay for a Dedicated server only if you have enough income from your website which is hosted on the Dedicated server.
