Default Probably another dumb question...

Servers come in various sizes and speeds just as a home PC does, correct? How does one go about determining what configuration would be best for their needs?

Selecting a server for yourself is not a very difficult task if you are sure about your requirements. It depends on the disk space and processor you need and also the applications you wish to run on your server. Also, it depends on your budget and the amount you will be spending on your server. You should make sure that you are well aware about your requirements so that you select the best possible server configuration for yourself.

Most hosting companies could assess your needs if you gave them a list of what you wanted to be able to do, correct? This background stuff is where I get lost because I have no clue as to a lot of the requirements.

Absolutely right. If you can give some information about your requirements then it will be possible to suggest you the best package which will suit your needs. Requirements may include the Disk space and Bandwidth you need with the applications you wish to have on your server. It will also help if you can give information about the programming languages you have used to develop your websites or the hosting platform you would like to have.

Yes you are right, server come in various sizes and CPU speeds. You can easily determine the configuration according to the type of applications you want to run on a server.Fire1

I think the easiest things for newbies (who are new to the hosting world) end up being shafted by those not so nice hosts that tell them they need Y when they barely use X in the first place. Good to see nice support here, its a change from some of the other places I have dealt with lately.
