Difference between your local machine and Dedicated Web Server

There are many differences between a local machine and a dedicated web server. A local machine accumulates a lot of space where as for a Web Server, you only need good internet connections to connect to the server remotely. Dedicated Web Server is easily accessible 24x7 whereas this is not the case with a local machine and has a few restrictions. In order to maintain confidential data, we can store on the web server.

Dedicated Web Servers are safely kept at secured locations in order to maintain highest possible security to the servers. At a Data Center location, hardware availability for upgrations or replacement is much higher when compared to a local machine. However, the basic fact remains you need a local machine to connect to a Remote Dedicated Web Server. There are many more points which can be discussed further.

As far as i know, she is probably running a live-chat application on the dedicated web server.

Yeah a local machine is not recommended for running a dedicated server as it's not that reliable, plus depending on your ISP it might not even be allowed as most of them prohibit you from running such a server using their Internet connection.

And if your Internet goes down, so will your site. So I would only host it locally if it was a small server for like a game and it wasn't a big deal if it went down..

I agree to you Lezlo. Using a Local machine as a Dedicated server to host your website is certainly not a good option. It is not really possible to give your website 100% uptime when you are using a local machine as your server. The reason for this is the fact that a Dedicated server is kept in a Datacenter where it is fully secured and also the facilities which are available within a Datacenter are quite good. It is not really possible to get the same facilities at your home for a single computer. Also, the climatic conditions of the place matters a lot when it comes to hosting your website. A Datacenter has many engineers working at the same time and they can solve each and every problem within the datacenter quite easily as they have the gadgets available and the hardware they need to fix the problem if there is any.

A local machine is certainly not an option to replace a Dedicated web server as a Dedicated web server is kept in a Datacenter which is safe with all the necessary requirements and this is not the case with a local machine. You cannot have all the necessary facilities which are available in a Datacenter for your local machine and hence it is not possible to have a local machine as your web server. Instead, it is better to spend some money to lease a Dedicated web server from a web hosting provider.

Oh, come on who doesn't have a datacenter in there closet. Just kidding, yes the servers are a lot more secure and reliable than anybodies home pc is going to be.

The difference between the two is that Dedicated web server is an internet hosting where a client is a proprietary owner of an entire server not shared with other users, that the single client find it more flexible than shared hosting. Local machine is something on your computer that is opposed to on a server.

It is always preferred to have a dedicated server to be placed in a datacenter, inorder to get the best performance of the server.

Certainly, Performance, uptime guarantee, Scalability etc. can only be expected from a Dedicated server in the data center. You cannot expect these features from a server at any other location and there are several reasons for it. However, I would like to thank you for that link. The information is certainly helpful.
