Default Sub-domain to different server?

I have a sub-domain and I would like to point it to a different server, but I’m a little confused. Actually, I think I just put too much thought in it and confused myself. In any case here is what I’m asking for help on.

The main domain on server 1 is domain.com and I want to host sub domain.com on server 2. What am I doing wrong here?

Do you have access to your DNS records? If so, you can just go in there and point the sub to a new IP and it should go to server 2.
