I want to revive this thread because its very informative.
In my own opinion, PHP will stay because of its simplicity. Even though Java is gaining popularity, PHP is still very much in use by many people and I don't think it will slow down.
Just like what others have said, its really a personal preference whether you use PHP or other programs.
