Well, I would say no. The reason .com domains are suggested is the fact that it is the most popular TLD available on the internet and it is easier to remember a .com domain in comparison to another domain. Also, you should make sure that the most important is the quality of content of the website and not the domain you have, however, .com domain is certainly preferred over any TLD and if you are targeting US for business, you should host your domain on a US based server for better rankings in search engines.

The domains with other TLD's also have good rankings on search engines and hence you shouldn't be worried about the rankings if you do not have a .com domain. Again the Geo-location of the server on which your domain is hosted makes a lot of difference and hence it is better to consider a US based server if you wish to get good rankings for the domain in search engines for the searches made from the US.
