Well, phpBB is open source and it is done by a group of people that have lives out side of phpBB. Obviously it will never be as good as paid forums such as
vB or IPB. But, comparing it to a few other free forums like MyBB, YAF, and SMF, it offers lots more things that can be useful. Also, don't be dumb with add-ons.
