It's always a good idea to learn something about managing your own server or vps, even with a host that provides excellent managed services (thumbs up to BODhost, btw!). Sort of like having a chauffeur drive you around town — there's no reason not to learn how to drive yourself, even if you won't be as good as a professional driver. I mean, if you own a car, you should at least know how to use it.
It's the same with a server. You probably won't need to know the really technical stuff, like server hardening, kernel and OS updates, etc. — that's why we have BODhost manage things for us — but knowing at least some of the basics, like using Virtuozzo, being able to keep track of resources, etc., will make it just that much better for you in the long run.
That said, yeah, most people need a period of adjustment when they first switch to a dedicated or vps, especially when they have no technical background in the first place. The person who told you to get a managed vps, Jenny, was absolutely right — managed services give you the security of knowing that your server or vps will be functioning normally, so you will be able to learn at your own pace and won't overwhelm yourself trying to learn new things. Actually, I've seen that happen all too often, people diving straight into unmanaged servers with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. It was a disaster. XD
